Live music is one of life’s greatest joys but it’s even sweeter when enjoyed in glorious settings and exciting locations around the globe. This week we’ve been checking out some of this summer’s hottest outdoor festivals across the UK, Europe, Asia and the USA. There’s some fantastic festivals happening this year… and you can make a holiday of it at the same time – what could be better than watching the sun set over the main stage, with thousands of like-minded people getting down to the sounds of the summer, and knowing you don’t have to catch the last train home.

Summer Sonic Japan 2019

If you fancy combining a taste of the Orient with a festival featuring some top acts then Summer Sonic could be just the ticket. Lollapalooza Chicago 2019

Are you blowing into the windy city this summer? You won’t want to miss the world-famous Lollapalooza festival which takes place from 1-4 August at Grant Park in Chicago, IL. The Strokes, Hozier, Tame Impala, Lil Wayne and Kasey Musgraves are just some of the names on the line up for this year and topping the bill is Ariana Grande. With 170+ bands from all over the world, you certainly get plenty bang for your buck at this one.

Open’er  (Gdynia, Poland)

This super cool line-up features Travis Scott, The Strokes, Lana del Rey, Swedish House Mafia and The Smashing Pumpkins. They say all the beautiful people who like good tunes will be heading to the lively and vibrant port city of Gdynia, Poland. Wondering how to get there? Its roughly half an hour away from Gdansk so that’s a good start for booking your flights and accommodation.

The festival will take place from 3-6 July 2019.

Ultra Europe, Croatia

Another dazzling summer happening is Ultra Europe which is taking place in the Croatian town of Split from 12-14 July. This one is a real must for lovers of dance music and spinning the decks are superstar DJs Carl Cox, David Guetta and Armin Van Burrin. Croatia is becoming a real hot spot for the party people of Europe and it’s the perfect place to combine a fun beach holiday with music, history and culture.

FIB Benicassim, Spain

If you think festivals are all mud and wellingtons, you might want to think again with this one! Taking place on the Spanish east coast between the great cities of Valencia and Barcelona, at FIB, you can soak up the sun and take in some great music.  This year’s line-up includes Kings of Leon, Lana del Rey, Fat Boy Slim, The 1975, Franz Ferdinand, Jess Glynne, George Ezra and many more. You can catch all this from 18-21 July 2019.

Colours of Ostrava, Czech Republic

Colours has been on the go since 2002 and has become a real highlight in the Czech Republic music calendar. This year’s line-up includes The Cure, Florence +The Machine, Rag n Bone Man, Years and Years and the man of the moment, Lewis Capaldi. What a great mix for all ages. Colours of Ostrava is on from 17-20 July. (Ostravia has its own airport but some flights are seasonal…)

Lucca Summer Festival, Italy

This one is a real treat if you love historical and romantic settings. During the summer months, visitors and locals alike can enjoy a series of open air concerts in the stunning Tuscan city of Lucca. Lucca Music Festival has attracted some big names over the years and the 2019 offering is shaping up to be more of the same. Check this little lot out…

Take That (28 June), Elton John (7 July), Tears for Fears (10 July), Mark Knopfler (13 July) and Sting (29 July). To see them all you’d need to stay in Lucca for a month which would be pricey but by no means any hardship, it’s a delightful part of Italy. For tickets: www.summer-festival.com/

 

Isle of Wight Festival, UK

The legendary festival is taking place once again at Seaclose Park on the beautiful Isle of Wight and boy, do they have a few treats in store. Taking to the stage over the four days will be the likes of Madness, Wet Wet Wet, Keane, Lily Allen, Biffy Clyro and Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds but there’s loads more on the bill – check out the full line up and who’s playing and when on the festival’s website  https://isleofwightfestival.com/line-up

You can also find out how to get there and accommodation on the island too. Sounds like a great few days if you feel like making a short holiday out of it.  The festival runs from 13-16th June 2019.

TRNSMT, Scotland UK

You can be sure of a warm welcome if you’re planning to join the TRNSMT faithful in Glasgow – one of the friendliest cities in the world. TRNSMT returns to Glasgow Green from 12-14 July and among the line-up is George Ezra, Snow Patrol, Sigrid, Catfish & The Bottlemen, Bastille and The Snuts.

Party at the Palace, Scotland, UK

The award-winning Party at the Palace is back for its sixth outing and the Linlithgow festival and is set to be another highlight in Scotlands live music calendar.

Taking the top spots are The Charlatans and KT Tunstall (Saturday) and Deacon Blue and Wet Wet Wet (Sunday) and the rest of the weekend’s acts are sure to prove a hit with music lovers. In addition to two days of great live music, the festival will also feature a funfair, kids’ entertainment, a street food scene and a pamper zone. Party at the Palace is renowned for being family friendly so if you can’t get a babysitter you can take the kids along – it’s never too early to introduce them to good music.

As a guide to travelling, Linlithgow is easily accessable from both Glasgow or Edinburgh, with Edinburgh airport closest.
