Take A Break With The Sounds of Summer
This week, we look at just some of the music events taking place around the world for 2017. If you love music and you’re wondering what to do with yourself this summer, why not tag on a dreamy festival to your holiday this year? There are some really cool places to visit that have seriously good music going on. Perhaps you’re a T in The Park veteran looking for something to take its place, and if so, we’ve got some top ideas for you. Nowadays, people think nothing of travelling to see their favourite pop stars and bands. Budget airlines and online hotel deals have made the world a much smaller place and there really isn’t anywhere you can’t go these days at the mere touch of a button.
Music festivals are not all about rolling around in mud to banging dance tunes either, there is such a mix of events going on that we’re sure there will be something to suit every musical palate. We know which ones we’ve got our eyes on!
If jazz is your ‘thang’ then look no further than the beautiful shoreline of Lake Geneva. The Montreux Jazz Festival has been welcoming music lovers for 50 years and this year is the 51st outing of this celebrated event. Whilst not an exclusive audience, the crowd here are passionate about their music and really know their stuff. An added bonus of this festival is the location. You can take in some of Switzerland’s stunning scenery and fascinating culture while you’re there. You can pick up flights to Geneva with easyjet.com and details of how to reach Montreux.
So, from the alpine freshness of picturesque Switzerland to steamy Morocco, you could be basking in the September sunshine at Oasis, taking place at the stunning luxury hotel complex, The Source which is set against the pretty backdrop of the Atlas Mountains. It is also just seven miles from central Marrakech, so it’s pretty easy to take in a tour of the city’s sights and souks while you’re there. Check out 2017 line up!
Another popular holiday hotspot this year is Croatia and you’ll also find a brilliant festival happening here in July. Perfect for dance music fans and clubbers, Ultra Europe is one of the biggest house music festivals on the continent. Set in the pretty resort of Split, the festival packs in an impressive programme of stadium show as well as beach and boat parties across the town and surrounding islands. You can get tickets and more information right here.
If you want to go to combine a trip to Ultra with a family holiday in Croatia, don’t forget to check out these great packages available.
Combining a music festival trip with some local culture is definitely time well spent and where better to get your fix of art, history and just a touch of style and glamour but Italy. All summer long, there are dozens of music events up and down the length of the country but one of the best ones to catch some of the biggest names in pop is the Summer Festival, held in the beautiful Tuscan city of Lucca, which is easily reached via nearby Pisa. In the heart of the city, there is a series of open air concerts within the city’s walls and the likes of Robbie Williams and Lionel Richie have performed here. 2017 is the 20th anniversary of the festival and among the artists on this year’s bill are Green Day and Kasabian.
Lucca is also perfectly placed for sight-seeing and this region is just crying out to be explored. The efficient train line from Lucca will take you to many parts of Tuscany such as Pisa, Montecatini Terme, Viareggio and the quaint little town of Barga. Again, a great way of seeing some of the country while taking in a festival.
From the romance of Italy, we take you to the Netherlands and Belgium where there are more hot dates in the techno music calendar. First up is Awakenings, which takes place in Holland in June.
And followed by Tomorrowland in July, when one of the biggest dance music festivals on the planet descends upon Boom, in Belgium (aptly named location!) This year, fans get a double dose as the festival extends into two weekends – 21-23 July and 28-30 July. Info and tickets here.
And if you’re serious about new wave and electronica, you should be heading for Barcelona in June. Sonar Festival, is one of the best loved music and electronic arts festivals in Europe and takes place in one of the most beautiful and culturally rich cities in the world.
Sonar differs from many other festivals in that it takes place in the city rather that out in a field somewhere.
For tips on transport and getting to the Sonar venues check out the Barcelona tourist guide website.
Finally, we take a look at what’s happening in the Czech Republic. A fantastic mix of many musical genres, Colours, Ostrava is a brilliantly diverse festival taking place from 19-22 July 2017. Music fans can take in a great show and explore the sights and attractions of the city itself.
