Top Tips for Phone Travel Pictures:
The Rule of Thirds
Just because you’re using the camera on your phone doesn’t mean you can forget the basic principle of photography; the rule of thirds. You can pop your grid lines on your camera to help you out, your goal is to keep the subject of the photo at the intersections or along the lines.
Try Different Angles
Angles are everything in photography, especially when snapping on the go so it’s time to get creative. Think of a way you can fully capture your experience and try something new, pick a new perspective to get that quirky travel pic. Or, play about with your photo afterwards when you’re editing to try out something new.
Avoid Phone Zoom
On a phone the zoom function is your worst enemy. It means you lose the overall quality of the picture, making it grainy looking. Get closer to the subject or the view you’re trying to capture, if that’s not possible then try doing a bit of cropping afterwards.
Embrace Blurry Burst Photos
If you rely on your phone for travel pics then don’t worry about a bit of blur – if anything this adds a realistic feel of the bustling city or lively town you’re exploring! Using the burst mode on your phone camera will allow you to capture multiple photos and then pick your favourite afterwards.
Use External Lenses
There are so many accessories for iPhones and phone cameras but there are a few that will really change your photography. Using wide angle lenses will give your photos a more professional look – like getting a GoPro without spending all that extra cash. You can get packs of different lenses which will give you more professional angles, definitely worth giving a go.
Handy Tripods
Sometimes a handy phone tripod can help if you’re travelling alone or want to get everyone in the shot. All you have to do is set it up and get yourself a bluetooth remote and you’re good to go! (Tripods also come in handy for other parts of travel too).
Editing Apps
tripsologists love using apps to make the most of their travel pics from their phone. The best option for editing is definitely Adobe but if you don’t have a subscription for the full package fear not! You can download free versions of some of their editing software for your phone, so you can edit on the go. Don’t be afraid to just play around with the adjustment features to get your desired look, you don’t need to be a professional and completely understand what you’re doing to do this.
tripsologists have also recommended downloading (free) Snapseed and VSCO to get the best instagram-worthy looks!
Prepare Before You Go
Before you set off on your adventure there are two things you need to make sure you have: battery power and memory. Without these two things you’ll not be able to capture any of your journey. The tripsology community recommend deleting pictures as you go, just the ones you don’t like or won’t use and they also suggest getting a portable charger. If you’re going to use your phone a lot on the go as you travel these come in really useful for emergencies!
There you go, with all these useful tips you’ll have the most beautiful pictures to choose from to upload and share with your fellow travellers – we can’t wait to see them. Photos are the perfect way to express yourself, reminisce about your adventures and show the world where you’ve explored.
