Things To Do In Dublin
Ireland’s capital city is full of history, charm, beautiful architecture and bustling pubs and is the perfect place to visit for a long weekend of exploration. There are so many different things in the city to keep visitors occupied and there’s definitely something to suit all tastes.
Best Things to do in Dublin
The Guinness Storehouse
Ah, Ireland, the home of the beautiful ‘black stuff’ that is enjoyed the world over. No visit to the city would be complete without a visit to the place where it is made. The factory tour is incredibly interesting and even includes a mini workshop on how to pull the perfect pint of Guinness!
The National Museum of Ireland
This centrally located museum is a great place to spend a few hours learning about the history of Ireland. It houses the greatest collection of Celtic artefacts in the entire world and it is also free to enter, which is a welcome thing in this expensive city!
Dublin Castle
Dublin Castle dates as far back as the early 13th century and has a gruesome and bloody past. Irish chieftains were impaled on its walls and prisoners held captive for years. The State Apartments, Undercroft, Chapel Royal and decorative gardens of the castle are all open to the public.
The Church
This bar, café and restaurant is literally an old church. It still has an imposing organ that dominates the interior. It also has stained glass windows and many other features that exist from its past life as a religious centre. These days it serves delicious food, great drinks and even has a nightclub underneath for those who want the party to continue into the wee small hours. There’s live music here on many nights and the staff are friendly and welcoming. Definitely one of the best spots in the city to enjoy a few drinks!
General Post Office
The General Post Office, or GPO as locals casually refer to it as, is an imposing and impressive building with a rich history. It was the scene of the ‘Easter Rising’ of 1916 and the interior was destroyed when the British shelled the building. It has a great museum inside where you can learn more about the building, its history and the history of the post office system in Ireland (I promise it’s more interesting than it sounds!).
Trinity College
Trinity College, one of Ireland’s foremost seats of learning, was founded back in the 16th century. Famous names such as Jonathan Swift and Oscar Wilde have attended Trinity College and it is the home of one of Ireland’s most famous and treasured possessions – ‘The Book of Kells’. The grounds of Trinity College are entirely open to the public and it’s a lovely place to have a wander around on a sunny day.
So, these are just a few of the things to do in Dublin. There are also walking tours, ghost tours, the Jameson experience, Butler’s chocolate experience and even boat trips on the River Liffey. You’ll be spoilt for choice!
